“I decided to temporarily cover part of this wall with plastic to preserve the mural, ‘Daughter,’ underneath. It wasn’t ideal because the plastic buckled and tore if I used too much pressure with the brush. Later when I was photographing the installation I spontaneously began tearing the plastic down the middle, so the butterfly/’Daughter’ could be seen. Bit by bit as the plastic partition was torn, the hidden butterfly emerged. I hadn’t planned this symbolism from the beginning, but as I’ve encountered with other projects like ‘The End of Shame’ and ‘HURRICANE,’ chapters of a larger healing narrative often unfold through the process of following a creative trail.
