Under Your Wings is an abstract mural painted in the interior of an OB/GYN office.
The original brief was to turn the creative doctor’s room “into a place of wonder and intrigue and welcome and warmth”.
“I’m particularly interested in transforming the atmosphere of a public space through colour and creativity. When we bring art into the barren, unconsidered and impersonal spaces we spend our days in, they become welcoming, inspiring and positively charged.”
“As medical rooms are generally stark, impersonal and clinical, I was invited into the space to bring femininity and warmth through paint and colour. Visiting an OB/GYN can be a vulnerable experience for women so I incorporated painted elements of both rest and curiosity – details that capture interest (and distract!), like marks moving up onto the ceiling near the examination couch, and areas of flat soft colour.
As a space specializing in women’s reproductive health and pregnancy, my intention was to create a bright atmosphere that made women feel at home and at ease. In other words: a room that felt like a hug AND a high five :)
The unstructured application of colour is juxtaposed with the necessary medical equipment. The soft rainbow palette with neon pops of colour and gilded shapes contrasts with what one traditionally associates with this type of space, and therefore feels less uptight. The colours loosely hint at a landscape and sunrise. The nod to nature incorporates the natural setting outside the hospital, which is located close to the ocean, and the female nurturing spirit.”
